Sports News and Results 18 August 2022

Thank you to all our players and supporters who travelled to Rhenish to support our teams this past weekend. All results are in the reports below.

We head into the first of the Winter PGSGU tournaments next week – the first up is the U19 and U15 Interschool Netball Tournaments being hosted by Rustenburg on 25 August. This is followed by the Interschools Squash tournament on 26 August, hosted by Wynberg Girls’ High School at WPCC.

Good luck to all our Netballers and Squash players.

The Summer season is almost upon us. A google form was sent to all our learners about Water Polo for the 2022/23 season. Please ensure that your daughter has filled out this form if she is keen to play for Rustenburg in the coming season. As soon as the training venue and coaches have been finalised, this will be communicated to parents.

Sports News

Cross Country

RGHS is hosting the Interschools event on Wednesday 31 August. The last 2 races of the season, at Jan van Riebeeck and St Cyprians, have unfortunately both been cancelled.

Football

On Saturday 13 August our 2 Football teams boarded a bus at 07h00 on a very chilly morning and set off for Stellenbosch.  A crisp and very clear day awaited our players at Rhenish Girls’ High School. Thanks to all our players, Coaches Lungi and Dylan and to our teacher-in-charge, Ms White. Thank you to the parents who came to support too.

1st team match comment by Coach Lungile Oliphant

Score: RGHS 0 Rhenish 3

“I am truly proud of the girls as they played a very good game. We were concentrating on playing football, while Rhenish played tournament football. And I am not saying that to disparage them. It all comes down to priorities. Our overarching strategy is to develop capable and confident footballers. In particular, we discourage “hoofing” the ball into the opposition half and then get to foot races. We want to play from the back and have proper build-up play culminating in attacking in the attacking third. We did this to the best of our ability and I am proud of that. We were very unlucky not to score at least one goal. We certainly created the chances, playing proper football, but we need to learn to be more ruthless in front of the goals. We are getting better.

Stand-out players were Emma Naiker, Othandwayo Melani and Innie song (GK). Othandwayo tore into the opposition defence with guile and poise and was unlucky not to score when she took the whole opposition defence apart. Emma was instrumental in spraying passes wide to the wings and had an incredible work ethic. Innie, as ever, was a rock at the back.  Although she had the misfortune of conceding a freak goal, she rallied to put in a great performance. Most remarkable were her clearances from the back. A skill she honed only from a week before.

In my view, progress is visible, and if we continue on this path, we will reach our goals.”

2nd team match comment by Coach Dylan Deane

Score: RGHS 0 Rhenish 5

“Special mention to Georgia Altbeker (Grade 8). She played a fantastic match for the 2nd team. Displaying great leadership skills, courage and a fighting spirit. Despite the result, the referee and their coach said that Georgia got their vote as the Player of The Match.“

Hockey

Rhenish Hockey Report
It’s difficult to believe that the last time we were able to play our Rhenish Derby was in 2019, and it was so great to be able to get that derby feeling back again. With pouring rain looming throughout the weekend, we were fortunate to escape it and enjoy some great hockey with some stunning Stellenbosch views. Thank you to Rhenish for hosting us.

Congratulations to our U16A hockey team on a massive victory, and the U19B and U19C teams who continue their unbeaten runs this season.

Netball

NETBALL REPORT – Saturday 13 August

RHENISH GIRLS’ DERBY DAY

Rustenburg Girls’ Netball teams drove out to a very cold Stellenbosch for the annual derby weekend against Rhenish.

Only our Junior second teams had travelled for the fixture, as our senior A teams had competed against Rhenish in the Premier Leagues schools’ weekend in April. The U14A, B, C & D and U16 B and C Netball teams were extremely excited about the outing and arrived with much enthusiasm and eagerness to play. Though the results were not favourable for our teams, it was grit and tenacity that proved a winner against an extremely well-skilled Netball school. Some close finishes for our U14A and U16B teams, who have proved consistent in our league, as they needed to stay focused and work hard for a result.

Thank you to Rhenish for hosting us and for all family, friends and supporters that made the journey all for the love of the game and our learners.

WYNBERG GIRLS’ LEAGUE MATCH 8

Rustenburg Girls’ Netball teams hosted Wynberg on Monday 15 August in the second last league fixture of the season. A stunning afternoon after a cold and wet weekend at Rhenish, we were ready to welcome our guests to compete for top honours in the First League.

Nine teams competed walking away with three defeats, one draw and five wins. Our U16A’s and U16B’s on a run of form, have been exceptional the last three matches and continue to dominate their opposition. They beat Wynberg 15-8 and 20-8, respectively. Again, our U14B’s were incredible with their performance over Wynberg’s U14B’s, with a twenty-point difference in the final score line.
