Football

On Tuesday 30 August our 1st Football team played a match against a touring team from Johannesburg, Beaulieu College. On a beautiful sunny afternoon we witnessed the best Football of our season. Congratulations to Beaulieu on their 2-1 victory. Well done to our goal scorer, Carys Gates (Grade 10).

It was the last match for our Grade 12s – a very heartfelt thank you to each one of them for their contribution to Team Football this year. You are all legends!

Thank you to our Grade 12 footballers for all you have done for the 1st Team this year.

Hockey

Hockey vs DF Malan and Springfield

On a cold and wet weekend, we welcomed our neighbours from the north, DF Malan. A home game that has proved to be scarce in 2022. Regardless of the weather, however, our supporters were out in their numbers and created a wonderful atmosphere for our players to be immersed in.

A massive thanks must go to the hockey parents who helped organise the braaiing and selling of chicken burgers, hot chocolate and other snacks and refreshments.

The U14B team also played a match against Springfield on Saturday morning, and despite their brave and heroic efforts, were defeated 8-0.

Hockey vs Herschel

Our penultimate fixture was against Herschel. In order to have all the matches played under lights on Friday, the hosting of the fixtures was split between Rustenburg and Herschel, with the “A” teams playing at Herschel. A tough night in terms of results for Rustenburg, but some truly commendable and special performances from a number of our teams, taking on some really strong Herschel opponents.

A special mention must be made to the U19C team who won their game 1-0, finishing as the only team in the school to have not lost a match for the duration of the 2022 season.

Outreach Clinic

On 23 and 24 September, we will be running an Outreach Hockey Clinic. The aim of the clinic is to provide coaching to children from disadvantaged areas, who are not exposed to quality coaching.

We are looking for any assistance with old sticks, shin pads, hockey shoes, as well as assistance with food and refreshment packages. If you are able to offer any assistance, please contact Olu Ncukana at ncukanao@rghs.org.za.

Netball

CTHSN – U19A PLAY-OFFS VS FAIRMONT – Thursday 25 August

Our First team had ended third in the Southern Zone First league of the Cape Town High Schools Netball, where they were invited to play against the second-place finisher of the Northern Zone First league.

Travelling to Fairmont High school on Thursday, 25 August, our First team players were excited, nervous and focused. They took to the court with only one substitution after losing Luyanda Ndaba and Kathryn Hendricks to injury. Despite the challenges and difficulties that awaited our premier team, they were ready and determined.

We had a great start and were leading 7-4 after the first quarter with sharp work in defence from Kristen McGregor and shooting from Stella Lazarus. Fairmont bounced back and ended the half leading 13-9, RGHS only managing to score 2 goals in the quarter. The team got back into the game after absorbing the pressure with some encouraging words from Coach Vanessa. We were back in the game finishing the third quarter 17-18 to Fairmont; Anna Gray and Khanyi Malinga putting in a shift in defence to turnover the center pass before Zeetha Gain could capitalize. In a thrilling fourth and last quarter, the team were leading 20-18 with about 2 minutes to go. With a few loose balls and missed chances, we made it difficult for ourselves, allowing Fairmont back into the game that ended 22-22 at full-time. Incredible endurance was on display from our wingers, Result Machiya and Azra Mahmood and skipper and Center Charite Strauss running the court breathless at times to keep us in the game against a very tough opponent.

Into extra time of 4 minutes, the pressure was on and only clinical moments would carry us through. The team fought with grit and firepower, but in the end were beaten by a better and more clinical team who just did not miss on goal.

WESTERFORD HIGH SCHOOL LEAGUE MATCH 9 – Thursday 18 AUGUST

Rustenburg Girls’ Netball teams played their last round of league fixtures at Westerford High School over two days due to the heavy rains. The first round of matches took place on Thursday 18 August featuring our U15A’s, U16A’s, U19B’s and U19A’s, with the second round of fixtures taking place on Wednesday 24 August with our U14A’s, B’s and C’s and our U16B’s and C’s. All nine teams were once again dominant on both days, ending the last fixture of the league with seven wins, one draw and one loss.

A difficult afternoon on the 18 August, as not only did the weather prove to be difficult, but so did Eskom. With load shedding scheduled for the afternoon, our U19’s had the challenge of contesting indoors with poor lighting and visibility; however, both teams earned their victories on the day.

On Wednesday 24 August, our Netball teams had a great outing, with a notable performance from the U14B’s and U16B’s. Kayleigh Scholtz from the U16B’s had a brilliant game completing multiple interceptions and showing outstanding defensive skills.

Congratulations to our U19Bs, U16Bs & Cs, U14Bs & Ds that have qualified for the CTHSN finals on Saturday, 3 September. The U19Bs and U16Bs have had an unbeaten season and are going to the finals to secure their winning streak and earn top honours as the best teams in Cape Town.

Squash

On Friday 26 August our top 5 players represented Rustenburg very well at the PGSGU tournament held at the WPCC courts.

Although only 3 girls’ schools entered teams, the standard of play was of a high calibre. All 5 of our players won their matches against the players from Wynberg Girls’ High School and then all 5 of our players lost their matches to the players from Herschel Girls’ School. We were placed second overall.

Dancing

A group of Rustenburg learners from THE DANCE CO took part in an international dance competition, the World Dance Movement in Italy in July this year where they did extremely well and brought home the silver medal. Locally they entered the Cape Dance Festival and they received gold for this dance. Congratulations and well done!

Rhythmic Gymnastics

The Western Cape Championship took from 19-21 August 2022.

There were 4 RGHS students who qualified this year to compete at level 10 in the WC Champs – this is out of a total 20 gymnasts who qualified from across the Western Cape – so Rustenburg is very well represented.

At level 10 – the gymnasts compete in two different age categories:

Lucy Walker (Grade 9) – under 15 years

Mariam Halday (Grade 10), Tamsin de Villiers (Grade 10) and Katherine McCree (Grade 11) – over 15 years.

All gymnasts perform 3 routines: Ribbon, Clubs and either Ball/Hoop.

Our gymnasts all performed very well and were selected as part of the Western Cape Gymnastics Team to compete at the 2022 GSA Gym Games in October.

Detailed results below:

  • U15: Lucy Walker: 1st place overall; 1st in clubs and ribbon; 2nd in Hoop
  • 15+ Katherine McCree: 2nd place overall; 2nd in Ball and Ribbon
  • Tamsin de Villiers: 5th in Hoop and Ribbon
  • Lucy, Tamsin and Mariam – all belong to Dynamic Rhythmic Gymnastics Club and Katherine – Cape Olympia.
