We are nearly at the end of a very busy Term 1. It has been great to see all the sporting codes grow in numbers, and strength. With most fixtures for summer sports being completed, winter sport trials have managed to get a head start, especially for Netball and Outdoor Hockey.
A few summer sports will continue until Friday 24 March, namely Social Swimming, Learn-to-swim, SocialTennis, Tennis Development Squad, Touch Rugby (social and teams), On-the-move, Football, and Running Club. Please see the “End of Term Dates” document for details.

PGSGU Tennis Tournament 9 March
The annual PGSGU Tennis Tournament took place last week Thursday at Rustenburg, hosted by Springfield. At the start of the day, with all the continuous rain, we never thought the event would happen at all. It was creeping closer and closer to the deadline to make a call, and with all the other schools not being able to reschedule, we thought, let’s just go for it and see what happens! It all worked out for the best, and the tournament managed to get completed without any more rain.
There were two sections: Seniors (Grades 10 – 12), and Juniors (Under 15)
Our Senior team consisted of three doubles pairs:
- Lisa Penney & Margaret Krieg
- Rachel Kane & Lucy Kane
- Robyn Gordon & Kate Ferguson
Junior team, two doubles pairs:
- Jenna Edge & Tara Neville-Smyly
- Emma Hilton & Evelyn Lindsay
Participants: Rustenburg, Herschel, St Cyprians, and Springfield

It was a valiant effort from all players and a great team effort with some really close scores from all pairings. The Rustenburg Junior team came second by only a two-point difference to Herschel. A sign of great things to come in the future! Well done to all the players, and thank you for your commitment and dedication to the sport throughout the term.
Last Tennis Practice
As a tradition, we combine our team practices for the last session. We use this session to build on the team morale and to say farewell to the matric players who will sadly not be returning for any more tennis in the 4th term. Fun games were played, ending off with a picnic gathering under the tree, with some very, very sweet treats! Thank you to our captain, Lisa Penney, and vice-captain, Robyn Gordon for organizing!
Swimming
Rustenburg took part in the A-League Gala last week Thursday 9 March, at Herschel. It is the biggest gala event of the year with the top swimming teams battling it out for the prestigious title. We placed 6th out of the 10 schools that participated. Congratulations to all our swimmers on a fantastic season, and thank you for all your hard work, effort, commitment, and dedication.
A-League swimmers: Isabella Webber, Jorja Turner, Ella Vossgatter, Aaishah Hartley, Roxanne Reuter, Tatum Malherbe, Imani Magotsi, Jade Jarvis, Ellen Hodgkinson, Skye Micklethwaite, Reese Edwards, Sophie Watermeyer, and Jenna Renecle (captain).

Rustenburg participated in the Cape Town High School Netball U15 Mini World Cup Festival on 11 March 2023 at De Kuilen High School. Rustenburg demonstrated resilience, teamwork and effort in every match, despite competing against really strong competitors. It was evident in their games that you are not defeated when you lose. You are defeated when you quit. We applaud all the players for their fighting spirit and for not giving up even when the score was against them.
