Western Province Hockey

Wow! Where does one even begin? With 14 members of the Rustenburg Hockey community involved in National and Regional Tournaments for Western Province, the holiday period always promised to be action-packed and eventful, and trust me, no promises were broken.

The WP South Zonal team took part in the regional tournament and was represented by U14A star, Kezia George (Grade 8). A couple of results didn’t go their way, resulting in a fifth-place finish in the tournament.

The U16 South Zonal team was represented by Ally Goulding (Grade 10), who is a member of the RGHS U19A team. Ally was also appointed as the vice-captain of the U16 South team and went on to have a great tournament, with her team ending as winners of the tournament.

Megan Wightman (Grade 11) represented the U18 South Zonal team that took part in the regional tournament in Paarl. Some gutsy performances were required on their way to a commendable fourth-placed finish.

Leah Hofmeyr (Grade 10) and Tatum Malherbe (Grade 10) were selected to represent Western Province at National level in the U16 age group. They both travelled to Bloemfontein for their respective tournaments. Tatum was selected for the U16B team, while Leah was selected for the U16A team. Tatum was elected as the captain of the WP U16B team and went on to drive her team to a second-place finish at the tournament, narrowly losing 3-2 to the KZN Inland A team in the final. Leah was named the vice-captain of the U16A team, and they were able to go one step further, bringing home the gold medal, and winning the U16 National IPT.

Five of the RGHS U19A team players were selected to represent Western Province at National level in the U18 age group. Jodie Blows (U18A) (Grade 12), Alhaan Emeran (Grade 12), Lisa Penney (Grade 12), Lucy and Rachel Kane (All U18B) (Grade 11s), also made the long cold trip to Bloemfontein for their respective tournaments. Jodie was elected as captain of the U18A team, while Alhaan was elected as captain of the U18B team. The U18A team narrowly lost 1-0 in the semi-finals to eventual winners, Southern Free State A. Their final game also ended in defeat, meaning they would have to be content with a fourth-placed finish.

Alhaan, Lisa, Lucy and Rachel anchored a strong WP U18B team in the B section of the tournament, seeking to gain promotion into the A section, ensuring that there would be two WP teams in the A section in 2024. They went on to win a nail-biting final 1-0, bringing home the gold medal, and subsequently securing promotion into the A section of the tournament.

Several of our coaching staff were also involved in national and regional tournaments. Mr Aaron Kuhn (U16B), was the head coach of the WP U14 South team. Ms Erin Coetzee (U14A), came home with a silver medal as the assistant coach of the WP U16B team. Mr Olu Ncukana (U19A), won gold with the U18B team. Ms Sasha Sivertsen, who went as an umpire, also came home with a gold medal after her brilliant performances with the whistle, earning her the honour of umpiring the final.

A very special mention must be made to two RGHS players who excelled on the national stage. A massive congratulations go to Jodie Blows (U18A) and Leah Hofmeyr (U16A) who were selected to represent South Africa in their respective age groups. Jodie, now a capped international, played in a test series in Bloemfontein, while Leah attended a gruelling camp, immediately after her tournament’s completion.

A massive thank you to all the coaches, parents and players for their contribution to making the Rustenburg Girls’ High School hockey programme, one of the strongest and most successful around.
