Rustenburg-Rhenish Derby
Football
The day finally arrived for the much anticipated Rhenish Derby. The football players had practised and were prepared for the big game. Rhenish had outstanding players, and they showed their readiness for the game too. Rustenburg supporters came in numbers and it was truly a beautiful moment, seeing learners in their uniform singing and showing their support for the players. It was truly spectacular to watch.
The 2nd team played their match first. They applied all the skills they had developed during their practice sessions, however with such strong competition, they were unable to secure the balls in the goalposts. The 1st team faced their equals. It was a match that got most spectators excited. There were perfectly targeted shots, but the goalkeeper was always ready to ensure that the ball didn’t make it past her – eventually, our goal became a beautifully positioned goal, giving us a 1-0 lead in the 2nd half. We knew that this would just give Rhenish more motivation to score, and it wasn’t long before they managed to do so and equalized. It wasn’t disappointing since they were really a good team and gave Rustenburg a very good game of football. In the end, we had a final score of 1-1. Well done to Rustenburg, both teams played their best and represented the school so well.

Hockey
For the first time since 2019, we hosted our big derby against Rhenish Girls’ High School, dubbed the RGHS Derby.
With lots of anticipation, and a massive social media build-up during the week, it promised to be a derby with just a little bit extra, and it did not disappoint.
With Rhenish securing themselves as one of the top 10 ranked hockey teams in the country across all three age groups, we knew that we had a tough battle awaiting us. Regardless of this, our teams performed admirably and achieved some excellent results.
The overwhelming support of hundreds of learners on the side of the field, made for an electric atmosphere that was extremely special to be part of.
A massive thank you to all who turned up to support the teams. You truly made it memorable.

Netball
Our Rustenburg Girls’ Netball teams welcomed our visitors from Stellenbosch, Rhenish Girls’ High for the annual Derby Day. It was an amazing day for sport all around and we thank all learners, parents and our RGHS community for coming out to support us.
At the Netball courts, there was a great vibe brought by our learners and the Rhenish learners, as all players took to the court to compete for the ultimate RGHS Netball bragging rights. All ten Netball teams competed on the day, with only our U15A’s, who have been incredible this season, walking away with a win by 1 point. The U19B’s and U16B’s both drew their matches after a thrilling contest. Unfortunately, despite a good performance from our first team, they couldn’t manage to secure a win. Well done to all other teams and coaches for the valiant effort and spirit on display at the Rhenish Derby. Though the results were not favourable for our teams, it was the grit and tenacity that proved a winner against an extremely well-skilled Netball school.
Thank you to Rhenish for visiting us and to all family, friends and supporters who made the journey all for the love of the game and our learners.

PGSGU Netball – Saturday 19 August
Rustenburg Girls’ hosted the annual Peninsula Girls Schools Games Union (PGSGU) Netball inter-schools, on Saturday, 19th August. All age group fixtures were played in two sessions, where the U14A’s and U16A’s competed in session 1 and the U15A’s and U19A’s competed in session 2 which started at 11 am. All schools were incredibly grateful that the weather played its part after a scare of the cold and wet hanging about the day before. RGHS welcomed our guests and competed for the inter-school title.
PGSGU NETBALL SESSION 1: U14A AND U16A
Our U14A’s were outstanding at the PGSGU walking away with two wins, and two losses. An improvement from last year’s result with a new group of grade 8’s, Coach Sarah was determined to reach top results. The team played well to earn 2nd place but lost out on a third win by 1 point against Wynberg which could have been the difference between 1st and 2nd. The U14s will be looking to improve on this at next year’s inter-schools for sure.
Our U16A’s had a tough outfit against the opposition, however, there were moments of great Netball that just did not prove consistent enough to make an impact in their contest. Our team was incredibly unlucky not to bag wins against Wynberg and St. Cyprians, with close results. The U16A’s have worked hard this season to compete against their opponents and have shown their potential, it is onwards and upwards from here for them.

PGSGU NETBALL SESSION 2: U15A AND U19A
Our U15A’s have had an amazing season already thus far and have been aiming to make a statement at this year’s PGSGU. The team went unbeaten the entire tournament, securing the maximum points available. It was a great spectacle to see the U15s showcase their talents and we are proud of them for flying the performance banner high.
Our U19A’s had one mission on the day and that was to dominate their opposition. Superb efforts by the first team, they won all their matches except the “final” game against Herschel which would determine the winners on the day. Nevertheless, outstanding Netball performances were on display by our players and they were satisfied to have given it their all despite the final result. We are so proud of our Netball teams and coaches for the hard work put in this season.
