Sports Update 18 July 2024

Netball

During the June holidays, Kristin McGregor (Grade 12) competed with the Western Cape U18 Oaks Team (the Western Cape A Team) at the Telkom Netball Championship in Pretoria. Her team achieved an impressive third place out of 16 teams nationwide, securing a bronze medal.

Kristin’s exceptional performance earned her spots in both the SA u18 and SA u19 top 35 squads, reflecting her dedication and hard work.

Congratulations Kristin on this incredible achievement!

Eliora Kanku (Grade 10) was honoured to represent the U16 Doves team from Cape Town High Schools at the Western Cape Inter-District tournament during the holidays. Hosted by Hoërskool Langenhoven in Riversdal from 3-6 July, the tournament concluded with the Doves team emerging victorious after their hard work paid off. Congratulations, Eliora!

Water Polo

Olivia Figaji (Grade 10) had the great honour of representing South Africa at the World Aquatics Women’s U16 Water Polo Championship that was held in Manisa, Turkey at the end of June. The competition was steep – comprising the 24 best national teams across the globe. Most of these countries have major advantages compared to South Africa – they have well organised water polo with indoor pools to train all year round and are familiar with international games, especially in Europe. For our girls this was their first international tournament. They had to learn fast and adapt to a rapid pace game. Still, they did their country proud, overcoming Kazakstan and Ukraine in their pool games. Olivia has come back to Cape Town with new inspiration, experience, and enthusiasm for taking Water Polo to the next level. Olivia received her South African colours at the capping ceremony on 22 June 2024.

Swimming

Isabella Webber (Grade 11) took part in Western Cape Short Course Swimming Championships. Isabella delivered an impressive performance across several events:

She swam the 200m individual medley, 200m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 50m freestyle, 100m butterfly and 50m butterfly. She made the finals for the 100m butterfly and came 6th, and for the 50m freestyle, was placed 8th. She was a reserve for the 200 IM and ended up having to swim in the finals, where she came 10th.

In addition to her individual events, Isabella participated in two relay races:

  • Relay 1: Her team finished 2nd overall.
  • Relay 2: Her team achieved 3rd overall.

Isabella also swam personal best times in most of her races, which she was thrilled about.

Congratulations to Isabella on her outstanding performance and for achieving personal best times! Her hard work and dedication are truly commendable.

Caitlin Evans (Grade 8) participated at the Western Cape Short Course Swimming Championship held at Generations Somerset West from July 4th to 7th.

Caitlin had an exceptional performance, securing:

  • 13 Gold Medals
  • 1 Silver Medal
  • 1 Bronze Medal

In addition to her impressive medal tally, Caitlin set a new Western Province record in the 1500m Freestyle event.

Congratulations to Caitlin for her outstanding results and for setting a new record! Your dedication and hard work have truly paid off.

The Squash League matches for Term 3 began on Monday, 15 July, with a thrilling encounter between RGHS A and Milnerton High School. After a series of undefeated matches, our team has advanced into the Boys B League, where they will now compete against boys and co-ed schools. This move presents a fantastic opportunity for our players to build confidence and face stronger opponents.

Despite going up against a very formidable team, our players showcased remarkable resilience and skill. They seized every opportunity and approached each game with determination. We are incredibly proud of their performances and are confident they will continue to display such spirited effort throughout the league. Keep up the great work team!

U14A Top Schools Tournament

Last term, the U14A team were informed of their qualification to the Rising Challenger’s Cup tournament to be held in Bloemfontein from 8-11 August. Since then, an exciting development has taken place. The team has been promoted to play in the U14A Top Schools Tournament to be held in Stellenbosch over the same time. The new tournament is reserved for the 12 best teams in South Africa. Congratulations to the team.

Paddling and Lifesaving

Ellen Hodgkinson (Grade 11) competed in the Western Cape Provincial Paddling Marathon Championships at the end of May. In a thrilling race, Ellen and her paddling partner secured second place overall in both the Women’s and U18 K2 Marathon categories. The event featured a challenging 16 km lap course with three transitions, where competitors had to run with their canoe before launching back into the water. Ellen and her partner put on an impressive performance, finishing just behind the current World Junior Champions. This is a fantastic achievement and a testament to their hard work and dedication. Congratulations to Ellen and her paddling partner!

We are also excited to share that Ellen has been selected to compete in the World Lifesaving Championships, which will be held in Australia from 28 August – 10 September. This is an incredible achievement, and we are immensely proud of her. We wish Ellen all the best as she competes on the world stage. Congratulations and good luck, Ellen!
