Netball

Champions Cup Netball

The Champions Cup weekend kicked off with a flurry of netball action, and our Rustenburg teams were right in the thick of it! Friday saw both our U16 and U15 squads take to the courts for the opening matches. While both faced initial setbacks, forcing them to regroup and strategise, they quickly bounced back. The U16A team showed their grit with a decisive win against Reddam, and the U15As impressed with a strong performance against Herschel. With a win and a loss under their belts, the stage was set for an exciting Saturday.

Saturday’s fixtures took an unexpected turn with a sudden and persistent downpour. The cold and wet conditions showed no signs of letting up, prompting the tournament director to make the difficult but necessary decision to relocate to the indoor facilities at Herschel Girls’ High School. A huge thank you to Herschel for their incredible hospitality in accommodating the remainder of the day’s matches, and to all the parents for their smooth logistical support during the unexpected move. Despite the change of venue, the intensity on the court remained high, with some truly memorable clashes. Wynberg Girls’ U16 snatched a nail-biting 11-10 victory over Westerford, Herschel edged out a resilient Wise Up 8-7, and our own Rustenburg U16s showcased their dominance with an emphatic 20-0 win against South Peninsula.

The good vibes returned on Sunday with the welcome sight of the sun, allowing the tournament to return to its rightful home on the Rustenburg netball courts. The final pool matches were played with fierce determination, followed immediately by the highly anticipated playoffs. Arguably, the most electrifying match of the entire tournament was the semi-final clash between an undefeated St Cyprian’s and our tenacious Rustenburg U16 team. In a heart-stopping encounter, the home side managed to secure a nail-biting 13-12 victory, sending shockwaves through the St Cyprian’s camp and igniting jubilant celebrations amongst the Rustenburg supporters. The other semi-final saw our young guns, the Rustenburg U15s, face the formidable Wynberg U15s. Despite a valiant effort from our U15s, who had shown great promise throughout the tournament, they were ultimately defeated 16-7 by the undeniable class of the Wynberg side.

This set the stage for a thrilling southern suburbs final between Rustenburg U16 and Wynberg U15. Rustenburg had the advantage of playing on their home ground, but Wynberg U15 had displayed exceptional netball throughout the competition. The final was a closely contested affair, but ultimately, Wynberg had the edge, securing a 17-12 victory. Having maintained an unbeaten run and boasting some of the youngest talent in the tournament, Wynberg U15 were undoubtedly deserving champions.

Congratulations to Wynberg Girls’ High School U15 for their well-deserved victory in the Champions Cup!

Hockey

Champions Cup Hockey

As always, the Champions Cup is an exciting affair, with the tournament format allowing for maximum opportunity for teams to make a final. 2025 featured 12 strong teams, including last year’s winners, Reddam House Constantia.

The Rustenburg team got off to a very good start, leading to the team topping their pool on their way to the quarter-finals, where they met St Cyprian’s. In treacherous conditions, the team was unable to get over the line, suffering a 2-1 defeat.

The defeat meant that they had a rematch against Paarl Girls’ High, whom they narrowly defeated in the pool stages. A repeat of the score line in the rematch meant that the team played against Parel Vallei. The team ended in 6th place, and while the team is disappointed with their final placing, the results do not speak to the performances on the field.

Congratulations to Coach Sasha Sivertson and the U16A team.
