Grade 12 students, Gia Paulse and Manina Viljoen, were invited by the Zeitz MOCAA Centre for Art Education to participate in a series of workshops exploring the work of the contemporary and uncompromising practice of South African artist, Tracey Rose. Her exhibition, SHOOTING DOWN BABYLON, made for rich debate and discussion amongst art learners from a range of different schools.
In the four-day workshop which extended to July, students were encouraged to exchange and connect with their peers about the themes addressed in the exhibition. The workshop presented a safe space to engage with challenging themes of identity, gender, spirituality and race. They learned and heard from the curators which gave them an insight into the inner workings of Zeitz. From their experience in the workshop, they also were encouraged to create their own artwork that was exhibited at Zeitz MOCAA in July.
