Sports Update 23 March 2023

As we draw nearer to the end of the term, all summer sporting codes will be ending this week Friday 24 March. Preparations have started for a couple of the sports on the winter programme (namely; Netball and Hockey), as teams need to be finalized for the National Girls’ Schools’ Festival that is taking place in mid-April, in Bloemfontein.

Touch Rugby

There has only been one match over the past week and that was our 2nd team taking on our 1st team. The 2nd team displayed a never-give-up attitude and gave maximum effort from start to finish, but unfortunately, they could not take down the team that has dominated their group all season.

Result:

RGHS 17 tries to 0RGHS 2

The last round of matches will be taking place this Friday at Rustenburg Girls’ High School from 14:00. Please come down to support, us as our teams battle it out to try and reach their highest possible position!

Indoor Hockey

The final Indoor Hockey matches of the season were played on 8 March against a mixed bag of schools. Thank you to Pinelands High School for allowing us to use their hall as our “home venue” for large parts of the season.

We’ve seen some incredible results this season, and the growth of Indoor Hockey at the school has been tremendous, with close to 100 learners taking part in the sport this term.

Please see the results from our league fixtures against Reddam House Constantia, Wynberg, Fairmont and Cannons Creek.

Peninsula Girls’ School Games Union (PGSGU) Tournament

The First Team competed in the annual PGSGU Tournament. This tournament is the culmination of the season and features Wynberg Girls, Herschel, Springfield and St Cyprian’s. This Union is 100s of years old and the tournament is considered the most prestigious for all girls’ schools in the Cape.

A massive congratulations to the First Team as well as their coach, Ms Sasha Sivertsen on winning the PGSGU Tournament. Their run to the trophy saw them winning all of their games. This is the first time that Rustenburg has won the trophy in 21 years!

This was also the last game for the matrics in the team, and The Sports Department would like to thank Robyn Biccard, Jodie Blows (c), Alhaan Emeran (v/c), Sophie Macdonald and Lisa Penney for their contribution to our Indoor Hockey programme.

Please see the PGSGU results below:

Football

RGHS played in a tournament hosted by Reddam Constantia on 16, 17 and 18 March 2023. It is a tournament that is increasing in its prestige and is by invitation only. So, we are proud that we were part of the twelve girls’ teams that were invited to participate. The other school teams were St Cyprians, Rhenish, Reddam House Constantia, Pinelands and South Peninsula, and RGHS in Group A. Group B comprised of St Stithians, Reddam House Invitational, Pelican Park, Fairmont, Edgemead and the American International School.

We had a big challenge from the beginning, with all our grade 11 learners away for a leadership camp on the 16th and 17th (Thursday and Friday); they were due to join us in time for the third of five group games. Also, these games had to take place while dealing with the daily grind of an ordinary school day. Through great combined efforts of Mr Ncukana, Ms White, Ms Van der Westhuizen and parents, we were able to take the field with great confidence. Mr Gates’ contribution and support cannot be taken for granted either. Thank you to each and every one of you.

In our group, we started like a house on fire, slamming five unanswered goals past South Peninsula. Vision Machiya (Grade 9) helped herself to a stunning brace and captain, Katherine Jowett (Grade 12) scored a brilliant free kick. Our goalkeeper, Innie Song (Grade 10) also saved a penalty. But it was the overall play and belief in our structures that carried the day and would stand us in good stead throughout the tournament.

Our next assignment was against the hosts, Reddam House Constantia. We prevailed 1-0, Vision netting the winner again. We played to goalless draws against Pinelands High and St Cyprians. But the scores belied what were high-tempo and tension-filled games. Our girls acquitted themselves well under great sporting scrutiny by our opposition. We are proud of them. Our last game was a dead rubber, as we had already qualified for the semifinals, finishing second in Pool A.   Despite great effort, we lost the game 2-0 to our perennial rivals Rhenish. We also lost our semifinal game against Fairmont, who beat us by the odd goal.

Despite the loss, we bowed out of the tournament with our heads held high, proud of the fact that we gave it our every effort. The fatigue, the injuries and some illnesses were testimony to the fact that the girls left it all on the field. Our defence was heroic, conceding only 3 goals throughout the whole tournament. But, the whole squad has to be congratulated and celebrated. This, in my opinion, is the beginning of great things to come.

Not too bad for a relatively new and small football programme!

Figure Skating
