Hockey

Fairmont & Queen Margaret School

The last week of the season was as true a reflection of the hockey season as ever. Joy, laughter, tears, celebrations and disappointments, but through it all, an overwhelming pride to be a hockey player at Rustenburg.

The week started with league matches for our U14A and U19A teams against Fairmont on Tuesday evening. These fixtures were scheduled to be played earlier in the season but were postponed due to a number of players being sick and injured.

The U19A team welcomed Queen Margaret School to our shores on Thursday afternoon. The game was played at Pinelands High School, with the visitors playing a netball fixture at the same time against Pinelands. With a number of senior players rested, the new-look U19A team handled themselves more than competently, walking away with a resounding victory. Congratulations to Jessica Gray (Grade 8) and Megan Adam (Grade 9), who made their debut appearances for the U19A team.

U19A team vs Queen Margaret School

PGSGU Hockey Championship and Durbanville High School

The final weekend was upon us. With one final league fixture remaining, before the main event – PGSGU. There was a very different energy around the place. On a chilly Friday afternoon at Rustenburg, the stands were packed to support the matrics who were playing in their last game of the season at the Rustenburg Astro, emotions were high, and the excitement palpable. The first team did not disappoint their loyal supporters and put on a special show, which was followed by one more loud cheer of thanks in the 2023 season.

All the while, the U14A team took part in their PGSGU tournament at Wynberg, where they showed how much progress they had made throughout the season, finishing in fourth place, and recording a memorable 1-0 victory over Herschel, who had previously beaten them 3-2 in the league.

Saturday was the turn of the U16A and U19A teams to do it one more time. The U16A team showed why they were honoured with an invitation to the Rising Challenger’s Cup, with some wonderful results that saw them only lose one game, and finish in third place.

The U19As were looking for a repeat of the First Indoor Team’s performance at the PGSGU, and they were not far away. With wins against Wynberg and Springfield and a frustrating draw against St Cyprian’s, the team knew that only a win against Herschel would be good enough to bring the trophy home. In a thrilling, end-to-end game, Herschel took the lead against the run of play, but Rustenburg quickly resumed control in the second half and the pressure paid off, scoring a great goal after a wonderful passage of play. While the pressure persisted, the winning goal was elusive, and we had to settle for a credible second place.

A special and proud moment for the matrics to run out for their beloved “Dawgz”, as they affectionately call themselves. It was also a special and proud moment for some of the long-serving members of the team to celebrate, reaching a milestone number of caps for the U19A team. Rachel Kane (Grade 11), achieved 100 caps in our match against Wynberg. Robyn Biccard (Grade 12) and Captain Fantastic, Jodie Blows (Grade 12), also managed to achieve 100 caps in their last game against Herschel. Well done to Lisa Penney who achieved 98 caps.

Congratulations to all the teams and coaches on a wonderfully successful season and a great end to it at the PGSGU.
