Sports Update 1 August 2024

Netball

After numerous cancellations and postponements, the RGHS netball teams have finally gotten the second half of the season back on track. Rustenburg faced off against Herschel in an away match, a fixture known for pushing players to deliver courageous performances.

The matches were fiercely competitive, but the absence of regular netball played a significant role in our results.

We’d like to give a special shoutout to the social netball players who formed the U14E team and played their very first match. A huge thank you to all the fantastic supporters who came out to cheer on the players!

Hockey

Matches vs Herschel

After what seemed like an eternity, the hockey season got back underway, and what a way to welcome the third term. As it always is, a tough fixture against Herschel did not disappoint. For a change, we were able to have all of our hockey teams get a match against the same opposition.

While results did not go our way, the matches were a great representation of how far a number of our teams have come.
On 2 August, we hosted our final home league matches of the 2024 season against Wynberg. Please come and show your support for all of our teams.

Congratulations to the U16D team who registered the only win of the weekend.

Further, congratulations go to Amy Penney (Grade 8), who made a well-deserved debut appearance for the U19A team. Amy put on a mature performance beyond her years and promises to be an exciting prospect for Rustenburg hockey.

Congratulations to Tara Neville-Smyly (Grade 10) who made her 50th appearance for the U19A team. Tara has been a mainstay in the team, having played all 37 matches that have been played up to this point in the 2024 season.

Football

Another week of the Youth Football League unfolded on Tuesday, 30 July featuring an exciting match. The RGHS 2nd team put up a great fight despite the narrow 4-3 loss to Livingstone High School. This was an epic match where both teams demonstrated consistency and skills. The match, which featured 7 goals and so many chances was incredibly intense and entertaining. It’s clear that the team played with heart and determination, and it’s great to hear that their effort was commendable even in defeat.

We wish the 1st team the best of luck for their upcoming fixtures this week.

Sailing

Faith Lyons

Faith Lyons (Grade 9) has been selected to participate in the 2024 IODA Optimist African Championships that will be held from 14 September to 21 September in Seychelles. Congratulations on your achievement. We wish you all the best. May it be a memorable and successful experience!

Isabella Keytel (Grade 12) recently returned from the Youth Sailing World Championships held at Lake Garda, Italy. This prestigious event is the pinnacle of youth sailing globally, with each participating country allowed to send only their top-ranked sailor, leading to exceptionally fierce competition.

Isabella competed in the Female Single-Person Dinghy (ILCA) category, which, being the second-largest fleet, is widely regarded as one of the most challenging. With 53 countries in attendance, the competition was intense. The Championships consisted of nine races over five days, with only the best eight races counting toward the final standings.

Despite initial challenges and disappointing results in the first few races, Isabella’s performance improved significantly from day three onward. She finished with a strong 17th place in the final race, ultimately securing 39th place overall. This outcome is a testament to her resilience and skill.

Representing South Africa at this elite event, Isabella has earned her Protea Colours, a remarkable achievement that highlights her exceptional talent and dedication. We are incredibly proud of her accomplishments and look forward to seeing her future successes!
