PGSGU Tennis

Our Tennis teams have once again impressed us with their exceptional performance. It was an incredible afternoon watching both our Junior and Senior teams demonstrate resilience and fighting spirit. Despite the sudden shift in weather from hot to windy and cold, our players never wavered and showcased their true talents.

The Junior team faced tough competition but displayed remarkable resilience and tenacity throughout. Our Senior team achieved a historic victory, winning the cup for the first time since 1978. This is truly a remarkable achievement, and we could not be prouder of our Tennis players.

Please see below the incredible achievements over the years when the trophy was last at Rustenburg.

Water Polo

Last Thursday, 27 February, the 1st Team Water Polo squad faced off against their Fish Hoek rivals in a closely contested match. Coming off the back of a successful Old Petrians Water Polo Tour, many players were still recovering from exhaustion and illness, which made the timing of their league games particularly challenging. Despite these obstacles, the 1st team managed to secure a narrow 3-2 victory, with strong performances from Olivia Nejthardt, Olivia Figaji, and Tatum Malherbe leading the way.

The following day, Friday, 28 February, saw all the teams travel to Somerset College for another set of fixtures. The U14s were unfortunately defeated, but Coach Jay Reiback was full of praise for his players’ efforts. Despite a 4-9 loss, this was one of their best results to date, showcasing the significant improvement they have made throughout the term. Lily Lingenfelder was a standout performer, scoring an impressive 4 goals.

The U16s played against Somerset College’s U19B team and dominated the match, securing an 11-1 win. Lily Hardy and Georgia Parr both had exceptional performances, contributing significantly to the team’s success.

The U19s had a brilliant performance overall, winning 6-4 in their match against Somerset College. This victory qualified them for the league semi-final, an excellent achievement for the team.

On Monday, 3 March, the U19s played their highly anticipated league semi-final against Herschel. Despite a 3-6 loss, the team put up one of their best performances to date in terms of structure and skill. Coach Oliver was thrilled with the progress the team had made, highlighting their growth and development throughout the season. Scorers Jade Jarvis, Tatum Malherbe, and Olivia Figaji all played pivotal roles in the match, and the team’s overall effort was nothing short of commendable.

As the water polo season draws to a close, we are proud of all our teams for demonstrating great promise, putting in tremendous effort, and showing immense commitment throughout the season.

Swimming

On Thursday, 27 February, the Annual A-League Swimming Gala, hosted by Milnerton High School, was held at Rondebosch Boys High School. This highly anticipated event brought together swimmers from various schools, and the RustyBugs—our dedicated supporters—came out in full force to cheer on our team. The competition was fierce, and the event itself was executed flawlessly, leaving little room for error in its organization.

Our swimming team finished 4th overall in the gala. Despite the incredibly tight competition, our swimmers gave it their all, performing admirably in each race. Their efforts not only secured a spot in the top rankings but also earned them a place in the upcoming penultimate Super Schools Gala. The gala will take place on Thursday, 6 March. This event will feature the top swimmers from both the Boland and Cape Town high schools, all competing for top honors. It’s expected to be an exciting and highly competitive meet, where only the best of the best will claim victory.

The energy from the Rust Bug supporters was palpable, and their unwavering encouragement throughout the afternoon played a significant role in boosting the team’s morale.

We are incredibly proud of our swimmers for making it to the Super Schools Gala. We are confident they will continue to represent Rustenburg with pride, and we wish them all the best as they prepare to take on the region’s finest.
